What should I bring?

In addition to your personal traveling essentials, here are a few recommended additions:

Most importantly, bring an internal commitment to yourself—to breathe deeply, to view the world with an open, curious mind, and to rejuvenate.

For movement and meditation classes, we recommend free-flowing, comfortable attire; we provide all mats and props.

For outdoor activities, prepare for Maine’s variable seasons with appropriate outerwear, including rain or snow gear, with plenty of layers. Even in the depths of summer, Maine can be cool at night.

For outdoor activities, we recommend bringing a pair of comfortable day hikers. Prepare for coziness. Feel free to bring bicycles or other outdoor equipment. Water bottle, sunscreen in all seasons, insect repellent, hat and gloves, and headlamp.MOOXLI will email you a more comprehensive suggested packing list closer to the retreat.

Do I need to bring my own yoga mat?

No!  SANTOSHA on the Carrabassett is a Manduka sponsored studio so they have mats, blocks, straps, blankets, and cushions for all our yoga needs.  We recommend the Jade Yoga Travel mat if you are purchasing one special to fly with. (It folds down to the size of a piece of paper.)

What if I’m new to yoga or meditation?

No problem whatsoever. We all have to start somewhere and why not start here, in a safe place, where you can focus on your own needs?  Our intention is to make all our sessions as approachable as possible. And if you prefer not to actively participate in yoga, we give you permission to lay on your mat in any position you are comfortable in and simply be present in your own body.

If you have known injuries or limitations in movement, we are happy to meet separately to discuss modifications and how to use props to your advantage.  Yoga truly is for every body.

The facility has an in-house chef who has traveled extensively across the globe and their cuisine is varied, ranging from Swedish treats to Israeli comfort food.

Two daily menu options include: the Omnivore Menu and the Vegetarian Menu. You will surely find some delicious nosh on this retreat!

Tell me about the Lounge and the Veranda:

The Lounge is open nightly from 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. where they offer craft cocktails and mocktails, beer and wine, and small bites. Grab a glass of something delicious and cozy up on the mansion’s veranda in Adirondack chairs or around the fire pits.

Will I have time to explore the surrounding area?

YES! We have left afternoons free of any scheduled CE time/workshops so you can explore and wander at your leisure! There is a wood-fired sauna, cedar barrel tub, and outdoor saltwater pool on the property.  The original clay tennis courts have also been restored.

In addition to the lovely property, there are many things to do in the area and local guides can be arranged.  Some ideas include:

  • Day hike along Maine’s segments of the mighty Appalachian Trail.

  • Engage in the meditative Japanese tradition of shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing, in the conservation lands of the Bigelow Preserve.

  • Take a plunge in a local swimming hole or right outside the back door—the west branch of the Carrabassett River sits right at the edge of the elegant lawns.

  • Spend a day paddling or rafting along the Northern Forest Canoe Trail from Flagstaff Lake in Eustis.

  • Visit the local Nordic ski center for a day of touring or snowshoeing through miles and miles of pristine groomed terrain.

  • Shred the gnar for a day of alpine skiing or snowboarding at Sugarloaf Mountain Resort: you can find us in the last village before you hit the mountain (and Sugarloaf boasts the only above-treeline skiing in the East!) Venture a bit farther afield to try Saddleback Mountain (60 minutes) and Sunday River (90 minutes).

  • Trek up to the Maine Huts and Trails for a mountainside lunch in fresh air.

  • Wade out for a morning of fly fishing.

  • Ride the Narrow Gauge Pathway gravel trails or blast down some slopes on your mountain bike

  • Play eighteen holes at Sugarloaf Golf Club, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and nestled deep in the mountains. Make it a long weekend and head out to Belgrade Lakes Golf Club and the Sunday River Golf Club, too.
